Background

The creator, J.R.R Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic – influencing many along the way like that of C.S Lewis, who converted from atheism to Christianity. There are many occurrences throughout the series that have biblical references by the use of certain characters and settings. There are various Christ-like figures in “The Lord of the Rings,” biblical symbolism, and settings that relate to those of heaven and hell. Although the overall setting took place in a time before Christian religion, and Tolkien may not have intended for religion to play a part of this series, his religious background serves some part in “The Lord of the Rings.”
